Brayden Thurlow’s late goal lifts Agra Risk Kings past Cochrane

Cannex Cochrane Generals 2, Agra Risk Wheatland Kings 3

The Agra Risk Wheatland Kings beat the Cannex Cochrane Generals 3-2 at Strathmore Family Centre Arena on Saturday, with Brayden Thurlow’s goal in the final 42 seconds proving to be the difference.

Neither team scored in a physical first period that featured matching roughing minors to Cochrane’s Coen Lane and Wheatland’s Jordan Laycock. Wheatland broke through in the second with goals from Tripp McArthur and a power-play tally from Nash Wassing, but Cochrane’s Nolan Smith answered at 16:35 to make it 2-1 after 40 minutes. Cochrane’s Marshall Wagner tied it at 17:15 of the third, but Thurlow restored Wheatland’s lead with 42 seconds left to play for the 3-2 win. Cochrane pulled its starting goaltender with just over nine minutes left in the third, and the final minute brought a flurry of penalties, including a match penalty to Wheatland’s Connor Kautz for a hit to the head.

Wheatland’s Evan McNair made 30 saves on 32 shots for the win. Cochrane used two goaltenders — Owen Hall Chay (31/33) was relieved by Isaias Maddigan (3/4) with 9:10 left in the third.
