New captain Evan Sine scored a hat trick as the Cannex Cochrane Generals beat the Airdrie Techmation Thunder 8-3 in front of about 500 fans in their Oct. 2 home opener at the SLS Centre. Airdrie led three times early, including on a goal at the start of the second period, before Cochrane scored four in the second and two more in the third. The night opened with player introductions and the club’s unity circle, with both teams standing together at centre ice. Sine takes over the captaincy from Diago Coelho, one of the most productive scorers in team history, who aged out last season. The Generals are 2-2 with 14 goals for and 14 against, and they host the Red Deer Vipers on Oct. 16.

Every goal the Agra Risk Wheatland Kings score this season will raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. Through the Goals for Cancer program, Agra Risk Solutions is donating $20 per Kings goal, and the club’s first 10 goals have already raised about $200. The Kings scored roughly 135 goals last season, and the team expects to donate several thousand dollars by spring. General manager Cody Holdaway said the cause hits close to home, with two members of the team’s staff currently fighting cancer, and he is looking for sponsors willing to match the donations dollar for dollar.

Evan Sine moves from alternate to captain of the Cannex Cochrane Generals as he starts his fourth junior season, all of them in Cochrane. The Calgary native credited the community, and the team’s involvement in events like the annual Walmart Christmas toy run and the local Christmas parade, with building a close dressing room.
Nolan Smith, Brandon Palinkas and Alexander Devnich serve as alternates. Palinkas and Devnich are Generals veterans, and Smith brings a long junior career that most recently included time with the Okotoks Bisons.
Sine said the group is still finding its flow after splitting the opening road trip, and it opened its home schedule this weekend against Airdrie and Medicine Hat.

The High River Flyers head to Okotoks on Saturday to face the Carstar Okotoks Bisons at Murray and Piper Arena, with an 8:30 p.m. puck drop. It’s the first Battle of the Foothills of the 2026-27 season and the fourth game of the year for both clubs. The Bisons took last season’s series 3-2.
High River is coming off a 7-0 home-opener loss to the Red Deer Vipers on Oct. 2, after beating the Quality Rimbey Royals 6-1 on Sept. 26 behind 47 saves from Erich Baxter.
With several local rookies on the roster, the Flyers are still searching for consistency. Generating more shots could be the key against an Okotoks team that has allowed 16 goals in its first three games.
