Cubs Hold Off Wheatland Kings’ Comeback Bid, Win 6-5

Medicine Hat Cubs 6, Agra Risk Wheatland Kings 5 — Final

The Medicine Hat Cubs built an early lead and survived a third-period push to beat the Agra Risk Wheatland Kings 6-5 on Saturday night at Strathmore Family Centre Arena.

Medicine Hat controlled the first period, going up 2-0 on goals from Lucas Dulle at 9:07 (assisted by Ethan Hall) and Reeve Zacharias at 15:30 (assisted by Hall and Logan Neuls). The second period turned into a track meet: Medicine Hat’s Randen Collier (1:47) and Jacob Hazzard, on the power play at 8:26, made it 4-0 before Wheatland stormed back with three of its own — Jordan Laycock (10:29), Connor Eeles (16:49), and a shorthanded goal from Emery Medicine Shield (19:43) — to trail just 4-3 after two periods of heavy scoring on both sides.

The third period was a track meet. Wheatland’s Charlie Goll tied it 4-4 just 1:14 in, but Medicine Hat answered twice — Nolen Sutherland at 4:51 and Treyden Kleinknecht at 5:52 — to go back up 6-4. Goll’s second of the night, shorthanded at 10:49, cut the deficit to 6-5, but the Cubs held on from there for the win.

Medicine Hat out-shot Wheatland 31-24 for the game. Cubs goaltender Hudson Corbett stopped 19 of 24; Wheatland’s Evan McNair made 25 saves on 31 shots in the loss. The game was heavily penalized, with Wheatland’s Bryce Tweit alone picking up four minor penalties over the course of the night.
