Cohen Richardson’s two-goal, two-assist night lifts Coaldale past Cochrane

Coaldale Copperheads 6, Cannex Cochrane Generals 5

The Coaldale Copperheads beat the Cannex Cochrane Generals 6-5 at SLS Centre Totem 1 on Friday, in a back-and-forth game that saw a simultaneous fight between Coaldale’s Brett Hudey and Cochrane’s Declan Kinch early in the third.

Cohen Richardson opened the scoring for Coaldale at 3:38 of the first, but Cochrane answered with goals from Samuel Dal Cin and Evan Malcolm to lead 2-1 after 20 minutes. Coaldale tied it on Chase Stronge’s power-play goal at 3:59 of the second and took the lead on Ryan Holm’s goal at 13:12, but Cochrane’s Kael Kozicki tied it again at 16:36 to make it 3-3 after 40 minutes. The third period opened with a brawl at 2:37 that produced eight penalties, including fighting majors and game misconducts to Hudey and Kinch. Malcolm’s second goal of the night at 2:45 put Cochrane back in front, but Coaldale answered immediately: Holm’s second at 3:05 and Kobe Fujita at 3:42 gave the Copperheads a 5-4 lead, and Richardson’s second goal of the game — on the power play at 7:19 — proved to be the eventual winner. Cochrane’s Marshall Wagner pulled the Generals within one at 14:52, but Coaldale held on for the 6-5 win.

Coaldale’s Cole Lavorato made 40 saves on 45 shots for the win. Cochrane’s Isaias Maddigan stopped 23 of 29. Attendance at SLS Centre Totem 1 was 135.
